Genetic Background & Origin
Native to the ultra-humid, tropical rainforest understory of South America (predominantly Peru), Fittonia albivenis is a creeping groundcover. Because it lives on the deeply shaded jungle floor beneath massive tree canopies, it evolved to thrive in low-light environments while requiring constant, highly stable ambient moisture and thick, humid air to keep its delicate, paper-thin leaves from drying out.

Detailed Plant Care & Preferences

• Light: Prefers low to bright, strictly indirect light. It is highly sensitive to direct sun, which will instantly bleach and crisp its delicate, patterned leaves. It does phenomenally well under standard fluorescent office lights or modest LED grow lights.
• Watering: Keep the soil consistently, evenly moist. Fittonias have highly sensitive root systems that cannot tolerate drying out completely. Water as soon as the top surface of the soil feels barely dry. If you miss a watering, the plant will collapse dramatically in shock. Thoroughly soak it immediately, and it will recover, but repeated fainting will eventually weaken the plant.
• Humidity & Temperature: High humidity is absolutely mandatory (ideally 60% to 80%). If your home is dry, it will struggle mightily outside of a terrarium or a high-moisture pebble tray. Keep temperatures consistently warm between 65°F and 80°F, and shield it completely from cold window drafts or air conditioning vents.
• Soil & Substrate: Requires a moisture-retentive yet well-aerated potting mix. A blend of premium potting soil with a heavy base of peat moss or coco coir, mixed with a moderate amount of perlite, works perfectly to maintain the stable moisture it craves without turning swampy.
