Genetic Background & Origin
Discovered relatively recently in the remote, humid forests of Sulawesi, Indonesia, this plant was initially introduced to the trade as Alocasia ‘Jaclyn’ (often scientifically correlated with Alocasia tandemii). Unlike the compact jewel Alocasias, the Jaclyn can grow to a medium-to-large size indoors, with leaves that can eventually reach up to two feet long under ideal tropical conditions.

Detailed Plant Care & Preferences

• Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect light. It can handle slightly lower light levels than some jewel varieties, but brighter indirect light will reward you with faster growth, deeper lobes, and more vibrant color contrast.
• Watering: Keep the soil consistently, lightly moist but never waterlogged. Unlike the Gray Dragon, the Jaclyn dislikes drying out completely and will let you know by drooping its dramatic leaves. Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch.
• Humidity & Temperature: This is a true child of the tropics. It is highly demanding of humidity, ideally wanting 65% to 80% to prevent the intricate, narrow leaf tips from crispening or turning brown. Keep temperatures strictly between 70°F and 85°F.
• Soil & Substrate: Requires an airy but slightly more water-retentive aroid mix. Use a base of premium peat moss or coco coir mixed generously with perlite, orchid bark, and charcoal so it drains rapidly while retaining just enough uniform moisture.
