🍁 ALOCASIA MASTERCLASS: How to Prevent the Dreaded “Winter Dormancy” ❄️
Alocasia varieties—like the stunning Silver Dragon, Gray Dragon, or the classic Polly—are the crown jewels of any rare houseplant collection. But because they are native to warm, tropical Asian rainforests, they can be a bit dramatic when the seasons start shifting.
If your Alocasia stops producing new growth or starts dropping lower leaves, it might be slipping into survival mode. Here is how to keep your tropical gems happy year-round:
- The Humidity Sweet Spot: Alocasias crave moisture in the air. If your home drops below 50% humidity, their leaves will quickly develop crispy brown edges. Group your plants together, use a humidifier, or place them near an indoor growth setup to keep them lush.
- The Light Dynamic: These plants love bright, indirect light. In the wild, they grow under the forest canopy. Direct blistering sun will scorch their leaves, but low, dark corners will trigger them to shed leaves and go dormant. Aim for bright, filtered spaces or a dedicated LED setup.
- Gentle Watering: Alocasias love staying consistently damp, but they absolutely hate “wet feet.” Let the top inch of your substrate dry out before watering again, and always ensure your pots have excellent drainage to avoid root rot.
